Inside the Grande Synthe Refugee Camp outside Dunkirk. Possibly the worst conditions seen within a European Union state. Up to 3,000 refugees call this home, having made the perilous journey over land and sea for many months to reach “civilisation”. Located in a field which is prone to flooding, between a housing estate and a busy motorway lies a scene of complete and utter neglect. Men, women and children live here, battling to survive a new war – one of hunger, cold, disease and mental despair. With limited fresh water sources, limited unheated showers and one chemical toilet for every 150 people the conditions can only be described as inhumane.
